Spring Art 2012- gives students the opportunity to associate with others with like interests and learn new skills in a laid-back atmosphere. No matter if you’re just a beginner or a long time artist, we base our course offerings on the underlying belief that most individuals want to be life-long learners. As such, we offer classes and instruction for all ages and experience. For the highest level of learning, all Museum instructors are Certified Art Teachers and/or Art Professionals.

After School Art (All ages)
January 30 – March 5 (Mondays), 4:30 – 5:30pm
Instructor: Kristen Holland – B.S., Art Education, Florida State University
Cost: FREE for Members, $5 Non-Members per visit
This is a program designed for the parent and child to learn together. Lessons vary in medium and can be adapted for use at home. Each class is an independent lesson. Registration is not required.

This class is a “How to” for students who want to move beyond a point-and-shoot camera, this class will teach you to use your Digital SLR camera such as a Nikon D3100 or a Canon EOS Rebel. Students should own or be planning on purchasing a Digital SLR during the first few weeks of the class. During this class you will learn exposure controls such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Intermediate to Advanced Photography Techniques

Learn the technical side of photography and how to get the shots you envision. Further your knowledge of the Digital SLR camera as an art tool. In this class you will explore HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, borders and vignettes done in Photoshop, lens choice and f stops for creative depth of field photographs, black and white photography with the digital camera, pinhole photography with the Digital SLR, Photoshop techniques for enhancing color and tone, table top photography and using auxiliary lighting to enhance your subjects. Wearable Knitted Art

Not your grandma’s knitting. If you don’t knit or haven’t in a long time, learn or reacquaint yourself with the basic hand-knit stitches, fabrics, and techniques in this knitting start-up program. Learn knit and purl combinations, how to measure and fit properly, seams, and finishing. Projects will include artistic scarf, hat and hand warmer designs.
(FULL) – Ceramics: Functionality and Subtractive Sculpture

This course will entail instruction on throwing clay pots, plates, mugs, and/or bowls; along with bowls, boxes, vases, and/or pitchers created using clay slab construction techniques. Ceramic sculpture will also be taught using a subtractive method where negative spaces will be carved from a solid piece of red clay which will provide your unique sculpture with depth and movement! The last couple of classes will cover glazing processes in order to ensure professional functionality and aesthetics for your pieces.

Silk Painting with Nuno Felting
January 31 – March 6 (Tuesdays), 6:00 – 9:00pm
Skill Level: Beginning to Intermediate
Instructor: Vicky Luffman
Cost: $145 Members, $160 Non-Members
Learn the art of silk painting with a little nuno felting on the side. Learn the process of painting on silk, using vibrant dyes. Students will learn the application of resists, applying textural effects and “Nuno Felting” which is the technique of bonding loose fiber into sheer fabric. Students will complete a painting, a silk scarf, and a felted scarf.

Trashy Design: Modular Origami and Paper Coiling

Learn the art of upcycling – transforming trash into art using various techniques. Create 3-D modular origami pieces (it’s easier than you think) and transform magazine pages into gorgeous coiled works of art.
Exploring Contemporary Art
January 31 – March 6 (Tuesdays), 6:00 – 9:00pm
Instructor: Joe Mitchell, M.F.A, Fine Arts, Florida State University
Cost: $20 Members, $60 Non-Member
Explore and discuss artist’s works that have served as benchmarks for our understanding of contemporary arts. Discussions will include; Claude Monet – considered by many art historians as the beginning of modern art, Wassily Kandinski – considered an early non-objective artist, Robert Rauschenburg – understanding his abstract sculptures, Willem de Kooning – abstract expressionism, and Earthworks – site specific works. Each class is an independent discussion.

Asian Brush Painting

Chinese Brush Painting is an integration of body, mind and spirit. The Spontaneous (Throw Ink) style taught in this class combines the traditional techniques of Brush Painting while swiftly capturing the idea of the subject matter and revealing the spirit of the artist in the process. Even if you have never picked up a paint brush in your life, with guidance you will successfully execute a Brush Painting each week. Subjects include “Fur & Feathers” (Animal/Bird), Flowers, Fish and Landscape.

Pastel Portraiture

Skill Level: Beginning to Advanced
Instructor: Vilas Tonape – M.F.A., Painting, Texas Christian University, Professor of Art – Polk State College, Internationally Exhibiting Artist
Cost: $130 Members, $145 Non-Members
All levels of artists are encouraged to participate. Students will learn the basics of creating pastel portraits and develop their existing portraiture skills. Basic materials will be provided unless otherwise noted. Students are welcome to bring their own materials if preferred.
If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be available. If a class is not canceled and refund is requested, a reimbursement will be made in full up to seven days prior to the class starting date. No reimbursement will be made after the seven-day period.
All classes are taught by Certified Art Teachers and/or Art Professionals. All teachers and Museum staff are background checked through the Jessica Lunsford Act.
