Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The 12th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition

March 2012 – February 2013

A Joint Project of Polk Museum of Art and the City of Winter Haven

Central Park area – Downtown Winter Haven

The Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition, a joint project of Polk Museum of Art and the City of Winter Haven, is a yearlong juried exhibition of sculptures from around the country. Ten sculptures were selected by a committee of community members and Museum staff in late January 2012 from the entries submitted. After all of the sculptures were installed, an independent judge visited the site and selected Best of Show, Second Place and Honorable Mention winners.

Following are the sculptures on exhibit this year:

  • Best of Show & Sponsors Choice: Steve Durow of New Orleans, La., “Levee Break,” 2011, cast glass and steel, 17 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet.
  • Second Place: Hanna Jubran of Grimesland, N.C., “earth water fire,” 2008-2009, steel and paint, 14 feet by 6 feet by 24 inches.
  • People’s Choice: Ana Lazovsky of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Israel, “Copacabana Wave,” 2010, fiberglass, cast aluminum, paint and steel, 4 feet 9 inches by 7 feet 3 inches by 5 feet.
  • Honorable Mention: Jorge Blanco of Sarasota, Fla., “Easy Run,” 2011, aluminum and powder coating, 15 feet by 7 feet by 3 feet.
  • Mark Dickson of Tallahassee, Fla., “Messenger,” 2011, welded and stainless steel, 10 feet by 6 feet by 4 feet.
  • Kevin Eichner of Hilton Head Island, S.C., “Modus Vivendi,” 2011, steel, 9 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 6 inches.
  • C.R. Gray of Hiram, Maine, “Rock-ET Man,” 2011, river stone, 6 feet 6 inches by 2 feet 8 inches by 6 feet 9 inches.
  • Judith Greavu of Dola, Ohio, “Arts Spirit,” 1989, bronze, 7 feet 5 inches by 3 feet by 3 feet 5 inches.
  • Stephen Klema of Winsted, Conn., “Hobbes Claw,” 2011, wood and metal, 12 feet by 4 feet by 1 foot.
  • Adam Walls of Laurinburg, N.C., “weight and balance,” 2011, painted steel, 11 feet by 7 feet 6 inches by 4 feet.

The Best of Show, Second Place and Honorable Mention awards were determined by this year’s judge, Sarah Clark-Langager, director and curator of the Outdoor Sculpture Collection at the Western Gallery of Western Washington University.

The People’s Choice Award was determined by the crowd at the May 3, 2012, Central Park Stroll, an annual celebration of the sculptures. The Sponsor’s Award was determined by the sponsors and was announced at the Stroll.

The sculptures will remain on exhibition in the Central Park area of downtown Winter Haven through March 2013.
