Crash Course: Toward a More Inclusive Modern Art History

  • Polk Museum of Art 800 E Palmetto St Lakeland, FL 33801 US (map)

Who decides which artists grab all the textbook and museum attention? Which artists have been understudied and why? Indeed, for every Picasso or Pollock, there is a lesser known artist whose contributions have been overlooked or underseen. This month, we're bringing you a Crash Course that aspires to open up an important conversation about creating a more inclusive art history. For centuries, certain groups of artists, including female artists, artists of color, and LGBTQ artists, have not received the proper recognition for their contributions to the art world. While these groups have been neglected in galleries, museums, and the classroom, we want to bring you a crash course on some key artists you may not have heard of before or gotten to know quite as well as the usual big name stars.

Join Dr. Alex Rich, Executive Director and Chief Curator, on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at 6 pm via Facebook Live and Zoom! Come ready with your crash course questions or with the name of an artist you think we should all know more about to drop in the comments!
