About Lauren Austin:
I am an African American quilter with over 30 years of art quilt making experience. I use family photos and my own hand-dyed, hand-painted fabric to make fabric portraits of African American work and life. I made my first quilt at 7 years old, and many quilts since that time. I studied anthropology, Latin American literature and Spanish language as an undergraduate. I studied and practiced law after a stint with the US Foreign Service before becoming an artist full time.
I am currently working on a series of quilts about black people and the natural world, and another series about International Human Rights. I work in collaboration with various groups to make community art. I have completed community projects in the US, the Bahamas, China, and Kenya. I live in Maitland, Florida.
