Gallery Perspectives

Join us every second Friday of the month for Gallery Perspectives! Each month, we invite special guests to offer unique takes on a current exhibition at the Museum, as interpreted through their individual lenses and disciplines.

This month, Executive Director and Chief Curator Dr. Alex Rich will talk with artist Reynier Llanes about growing up as an artist in Cuba and his exhibition Timeless Origins, on display now at the Polk Museum of Art.

Reynier Llanes was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. In addition to studying at the Escuelas de Instructores de Arte in his native city, Llanes was mentored by celebrated contemporary realist Jean Miguel Suarez early in his career. After moving to the United States in 2007, Llanes’ artistic career began to flourish. Llanes received a “first purchase award” by the City of Charleston at MOJA Arts Festival. His artwork can be found in the collections of Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina), the Rollins Museum of Art (Winter Park, Florida), and the Snite Museum of Art (South Bend, Indiana), and has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the East Coast. Llanes is now based in Miami, Florida.
