For the past decade, in addition to working as solo artists, Pierre and Cathy Dutertre have created compelling artwork as a photographic duo, integrating their individual and collective experiences into a thought-provoking and moving body of work like that which forms the centerpiece of this exhibition. Especially in a time that has inspired many journeys of self-exploration and a global reconsideration of ourselves and our places in the world, the Polk Museum of Art is proud to present these recent works by the couple that make up the fittingly-titled Quest.
As the Dutertres explain: "Quest is an ongoing series of ethereal self-portraits that probe the fragmented and shadowy space of dreams, memory, and personal history in search of an elusive sense of self, purpose and place in this world. These reflective images attempt to give visual form to an intimate journey of self-discovery that navigates the fluid borders of the known and the unknown, the conscious and the unconscious, the real and the possible. As a photographic journal of an individual’s struggle to define and understand their terms of existence, Quest is both a personal and universal narrative."
Each of us quests to find ourselves throughout our lives, and, in this set of years unlike any other, Quest resounds beautifully with this moment; Quest offers a visual and aestheically-rewarding respite that invites inquiry not only into who we are as individuals but also who we are in this world we share so precariously with others.
