[Virtual] The Working Artist LIVE with Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso

Ever wonder what a day in the life of a working artist is like? Where their inspiration comes from or how they create their incredible pieces of art? You’re in luck! Our amazing Curatorial team interviewed an artist a week for the month of June — LIVE! Each interview takes a peek into their studio spaces, to learn about their backgrounds, and answers any and all questions about their careers, creative processes, and even advice for other aspiring art world stars.

Watch Dr. Alex Rich, Executive Director and Chief Curator, along with our fifth guest artist, Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso!

A little about our guest: Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso is known for her Old-Master-style self-portrait homages to historical women artists and for her complex and deeply engaging narrative paintings. An exemplary academic painter, Dellosso is a native New Yorker of Cuban and Ecuadorian heritage and has been celebrated internationally for her work. Dellosso paints as if she were a master artist from centuries ago — paying active tribute to styles and artists of the past — but, by making her paintings inherently modern, integrating unmistakably contemporary elements into them, she keeps viewers guessing as to any given work’s precise meaning. Her remarkable exhibition, A Brush with HerStory, is an ode to overlooked and forgotten women artists of the past and remains on view through October 25, 2020, at the Polk Museum of Art.

Dellosso received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including two solo exhibitions at The Butler Institute of American Art in 2006 and 2016 and her current exhibition, which traveled from the Heckscher Museum in New York to the Polk Museum in December 2019. Her work can be found in many permanent museum collections, including that of the Polk Museum.

Recorded Tuesday, June 30 at 6 pm via Facebook Live.
