The United States holds a unique place in the world as a successful melting pot of many varied cultures. That same e pluribus unum diversity is reflected in the story of American art. From its European roots in the colonial period to its undisputed global dominance in the 20th century, art in our vast, freedom-loving country has forged its own independent path and fulfilled a creative “manifest destiny” that is distinctly American. In this class, we’ll explore the broad contours of American art in the context of regional differences, historical events, and the ever-changing lens of popular culture. Join us as we discover the major personalities, works, and styles that have come to define American painting, sculpture, and architecture -- the art in the country that we call “home”!

Jan Hurndon has served as a docent at the AGB for 11 years, and has taught an art appreciation class at the museum for the last 10 years. An incurable “culture geek”, she spent part of her college years in Ecuador and Paris, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and French. Jan spent most of her working life in international marketing, a career that literally showed her the world. Her love of art and history always loomed in the background, so she returned to school (some 30 years later!) and earned a master’s degree in history and culture where she focused her research on French Gothic architecture. When she’s not making memories with her grandkids or busy planning her next travel adventure with her husband, she counts herself as extremely blessed to be able to share her passion for the visual arts with the local community through the AGB.
