The use of black paint can be so incredibly beautiful and expressive – or it can just lie there like a dead hole in the canvas. The trick is to understand that there really is no such thing as black – only combinations of deep rich colors which together can create the illusion of a “living black”. These black colors are called “chromatics” and this workshop focuses on the combinations that will yield the depth of value we need while keeping a feeling of life and movement. We will also explore using exciting colors to create highlights and shine. We will be using one of my award winning crow paintings as a guide with photos as a reference.

Supplies:

Painting materials are provided in each Kate Carney workshop, including: toned canvases, oil paints, mediums, palette knives, palettes, and references. However, students must bring their own bristle brushes. (Kate recommends Princeton’s 6300 series synthetic bristle brushes, but any bristle brushes made for oil will do.):

  • #8 Round

  • #4 Flat

  • #2 Flat

This is a great opportunity for acrylic painters to try oils without the heavy paint investment. Additionally, using our paints and canvases will make it easier for you to focus on learning techniques rather than wrestling with your paints.

Suitable for all stages of artistic experience. Please bring a packed lunch.
