Art history – indeed, all of human history – abounds in heart-wrenching tales of the “creative genius” who is plagued throughout life with unimaginable tragedy, debilitating physical affliction, mental illness, social isolation, or a combination of ills. Does the greatest art come forth as a result of adversity? Is adversity the price paid by some artists for pushing the creative limits set by the critics of their day? Or is any cause-and-effect relationship between art and adversity just a myth? Join us as we touch on this debate and look at the lives and oeuvres of some well-known “sufferers” such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Goya, Van Gogh, Kahlo, and others. We’ll also explore the time-honored work of a number of lesser-known artists who have endured their own seemingly insurmountable pain and hardship.
